Overview:

The Marketing Department of Arnold & Porter has an immediate opening for a Manager of Business Development. Based in the firm’s New York or Washington, DC office, the Manager is responsible for managing the creation and implementation of business development strategies and activities for the Corporate & Finance practices.

The Manager will work closely with practice group leaders and attorney members to develop business plans, execute pitches and proposals, and manage day-to-day business development activities and related marketing efforts. This role also may support related industry or sector initiatives. Serving as the primary liaison between the practice group and the Marketing Department, the manager collaborates with colleagues across the Marketing team, including business development, communications, events, and business intelligence, to align resources and drive practice group and firmwide initiatives.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborates with practice chairs and working group leaders to develop business development strategies for the Corporate & Finance practice areas, including support in identifying trends and opportunities, expanding existing client matters, and identifying and pursuing cross-selling opportunities.
Serves as trusted advisor to the lawyers to advance their business development efforts, including developing business plans and coaching on best practices.
Manages the marketing and business development activities for the practice including:
Maintain practice/industry/sector descriptions
Manage League Tables associated with practices
Manage experience data associated with practices
Coordinate webinars and client events with the Events Team
Identify and support profile-raising opportunities for practice areas, including sponsorships, in-house presentations, conferences and professional speaking opportunities
Develops compelling pitches, proposals, and RFP responses tailored to the client opportunity.
Develops marketing collateral, website descriptions, and other client facing materials; ensures materials are regularly updated.
Facilitates the integration of lateral partners and counsel, including coaching on new business opportunities.
Develops and manages practice budget, and evaluates and tracks ROI on BD initiatives.
Collaborates with Business Development Managers across all practice/industry groups to identify and pursue cross-selling opportunities.
Leads the strategy and execution for directories and awards such as Chambers and other practice-recognition submissions.
Identifies matters or issues that are potentially media-worthy for the Media Relations team to implement PR, awards and other media placements for the practice groups.
Supervises and mentors assigned BD team members on activities including pitch and proposal materials; updates to practice descriptions, experience items, and attorney bios; directory submissions and event logistics.
Serves to support the team as needed, including covering other practice groups during manager leaves.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree a plus.
Minimum of six years of marketing and business development experience, with prior law firm financial services industry or investment banking experience preferred.
Specific experience with and knowledge of corporate and finance practice is desired.
Strong knowledge of law firms, professional services, or in-house legal organizations.
Strong writing skills required.
Skilled in a range of computer software applications, including databases, MS-Word, MS-Excel, and MS-PowerPoint.
Experience with CRM, Foundation, and other Marketing and Financial databases preferred.
Exceptional client service, both internal and external.
Strong project management skills, including independent judgment and decision-making.
Ability to build rapport and work comfortably with partners.
Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate a high degree of trustworthiness in handling confidential and sensitive information.
Ability to strategically maintain financial/budgetary information.
Effective leadership experience.
Prior supervisory experience.
Ability to be a change agent and drive new firm initiatives.
Strong problem solving skills.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $124,800 to $170,000.  The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
